How to Properly SEO Your Blogger Posts: A Step-by-Step Guide

How to Properly SEO Your Blogger Posts: A Step-by-Step Guide

While WordPress often receives the majority of SEO attention, Blogger is a powerful and SEO-friendly platform in its own right, particularly because it's owned by Google. By following these steps, you can significantly increase your chances of ranking high in search results.

Let's break it down into three phases: Before Writing, While Writing & Formatting, and After Publishing.

Phase 1: Before You Write (The Setup)

1. Keyword Research is Non-Negotiable

This is the foundation of all SEO. You need to find the specific words and phrases your target audience is searching for.

2. Analyze the Competition

Type your primary keyword into Google. Look at the top 3-5 results.

  • What questions do they answer?
  • How long are they?
  • Can you provide more detail, better examples, or a more engaging format?

3. Craft Your SEO Title & Meta Description Before Writing

In Blogger, you set these separately from your post title, which is a huge advantage.

· SEO Title: This is the most important on-page SEO element. It's the blue clickable link in search results.

  •   Put your primary keyword at the beginning.
  •   Make it compelling (use numbers, power words, or a benefit).
  •   Keep it under 60 characters.
  •   Example: Easy Healthy Snacks for Kids: 5 No-Fuss Recipes

· Meta Description: This is the snippet text under the title. It doesn't directly affect rankings, but it is crucial for generating clicks.

  •    Write a 150-160 character summary that includes your keyword.
  •    Use a call-to-action like "Learn More" or "Discover How."
  •    Example: Struggling to find healthy snacks your kids will love? Discover 5 easy, no-bake recipes that are ready in minutes. Perfect for busy parents!

Phase 2: While Writing & Formatting (On-Page SEO)

This is where you optimize your content inside the Blogger post editor.

1. Structure Your Post with Headings

Use the Heading formatting tools in the Blogger toolbar to create a hierarchy. This helps readers and Google understand your content's structure.

  • Post Title: This is your <H1>. You only need one. Make it engaging and include your keyword.
  • Main Sections: Use Heading 2 for your main section titles. Include your keyword in at least one H2.
  • Sub-sections: Use Heading 3 under your H2s.

A well-structured post is easy to read and ranks better.

2. Optimize Your Content

  • First Paragraph: Mention your primary keyword naturally within the first 100 words.
  • Body Text: Use your keyword and related terms (LSI keywords) throughout the post. Write naturally—avoid keyword stuffing!
  • URL Slug: When you publish, Blogger creates a URL from your post title. Edit this permalink to be short, clean, and include your primary keyword.
  •  Before: yourblog.blogspot.com/2024/05/my-new-post-about-cooking.html
  •  After: yourblog.blogspot.com/easy-healthy-snacks-kids

3. Optimize All Images

Images are a major source of traffic from Google Images.

  •  File Name: Before uploading, name your image file descriptively (e.g., easy-no-bake-granola-bars.jpg instead of IMG_1234.jpg).
  •  Alt Text: This is critical. In the Blogger image properties box, add a descriptive Alt Text that includes your keyword if it fits.
  •   Example Alt Text: A plate of easy no-bake granola bars for kids

4. Use Internal Linking

Link to other relevant posts on your own blog. This keeps readers engaged, reduces bounce rate, and helps Google crawl your site. In the Blogger editor, simply highlight text, click the link button, and search for another one of your posts.

Phase 3: After Publishing (The Blogger-Specific Settings)

Once your post is written, don't hit "Publish" just yet! Go to the settings on the right-hand side (or under the "Post Settings" menu).

1. Set the "Search Description."

This is where you paste the Meta Description you crafted in Phase 1. This is the single most important SEO field in Blogger.

Location: On the right-hand sidebar, under "Post Settings," find the "Search Description" box.

2. Add "Labels" (Your Categories/Tags)

Labels in Blogger act as your website's categories and tags. They help organize your content and create topical relevance.

  •  Add relevant labels like healthy snacks, recipes for kids, and parenting tips.
  • Be consistent with your labels. This helps both users and search engines understand the structure of your blog.

3. Promote Your Post

SEO isn't just about what you do on your blog.

  • Share on Social Media: Post the link on Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter, etc.
  • Submit to Google: Use Google Search Console. This is a free tool that notifies Google about new content. Simply add your blog's sitemap (usually yourblog.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?orderby=updated) to Search Console, and Google will automatically notify you of new posts.

Blogger SEO Checklist Summary:

· Researched a primary keyword.

· Written a compelling SEO Title (<60 chars).

· Written a compelling Search Description/Meta Description (150 chars).

· Included keyword in the Post Title (H1) and one H2.

· Added descriptive Alt Text to all images.

· Included 1-2 relevant internal links.

· Added relevant Labels.

By following these steps, you're leveraging the full power of the Blogger platform for SEO. It’s a robust system—you just need to know where to click
